SWINDON TOWN: Power reveals discussions with Southampton over Stephens

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Jack Stephens is a loan target for Swindon Town Jack Stephens is a loan target for Swindon Town

SWINDON Town chairman Lee Power has revealed that he is in discussions with Southampton over the possible loan signing of Jack Stephens.

Stephens impressed during a temporary spell in Wiltshire last season and Power has confirmed that he has made contact with the centre-back's parent club over a potential return to the County Ground.

During the BBC Wiltshire fans' phone-in this evening, he said: "We are in conversations with Southampton about (Stephens). They're aware we really like the lad."

Would be great to get Stephens back on loan who is a very good player and very good on the ball.

Lets hope Power can sort out a deal and a season long loan would be ideal.

He would be an asset if we could have him without doubt. We were far and away better after his arrival last season. Good to see Power straight down to business now Jedgate is behind us.

Lee mentioned that Henville was not insurable after last season and is why they had to look for a pay as you play deal to protect the club and so Carlisle are taking a huge gamble obviously with a non insured player. Jack Stephens on the other hand is a loan player but one of huge potential and yes I would welcome him for a season. Keep hearing we are in for Jay Turley one of the best defenders outside the football league so could have another Flint on our hands but more importantly he would be ours. Lee was excellent on the radio hour and sure we will have another good season. Discounts on season tickets from tomorrow apparently.

All we need now is a new experienced CB along side him and a decent LB and the defence will be sorted.

Expecting some announcements this week of one or two signings to include a new striker.

Would welcome Stephens back here big time , but it should be noted that he didn't look so assured without Troy , so a commanding figure would be welcome to fit in alongside , not to sure I agree with Lee when he says we have one of the strongest midfield in this division though , could do with more physical type in there , someone who can also lead to give it that extra edge particularly on the heavier pitches , also not to happy with Byrne as our only experienced L.B. this area could also be strengthened , as well as a striker and a winger , then we should be up and running , easier said than done though , but I trust Power/ Cooper will do their utmost.

Would be super if they get Jack Stephens back for the season, was interesting comment on Troy could not be insured. It has been unfortunate for players we signed who ended up with injuries however did take its Toll on STFC wages wise.Wish all the team an injury free season and carry on where they left off in May

Wouldn't take Turley as a definate as we were also linked to Yan Klukowski at the same time and he has signed for Newport!
.
De Costa is a CB not a FB - Jones is our understudy at LB - wo can also play on the left of a back 3 as we saw against Rotherham
.
I wouldn't expect De Costa to feature much though - as he had a deal as he was injured so they wanted to see how he develops injury free
.
We also have Josue Antonio the 18 year old who won the Win A Pro competition whho is a CB
.
JVL is also a CB / DM - his YouTube clipos show him at the back - so he could slot in alongside Stephens and we would have 2 ball palyers there
.
I don't get all the negativity to Byrne - he is a great player in my opinion as as we have seen at the World Cup the attacking full back is really back in favour
.
I think Byrne suffered a little like Luongo did by not having a set position - both need to be given one role and then a decent run in that role to make it their own
.
I'm more than happy with Byrne as our LB - then if he did get injured then we can always use the loan market if we Cooper doesn't think Jones is ready for an extended run in the team

I agree that Byrne should be given a run in a set position , but I would hardly describe him as a great player at this point , attacking seems to be a stronger attribute in his game rather than defending , a part of his game that needs improving , also his crosses into the box can sometimes be woeful , so I see him more like promising than great , hopefully the experience gained from last season would have been of benefit to him, and therefore we shall witness some improvement on the weaker parts of his game.

I'm all for our 3-5-2 system with the two Nathan's on either flank. Both are excellent going forward. Nathan T needs to learn not to dive in sometimes and Nathan B does need to improve defending. But at Division 3 level they are excellent. We will also be able to have my preferred midfield "three" of Yasir, Louis and Massimo.

I am not Massimo's biggest fan but I think him at the front of the three would best utilise his skills. Louis and Yasir to break up and move forward as and when.

Clearly we are very short at centre back at the moment but really feel this formation will work for the players we have and suit them.

As much as I want Miles to succeed I'm not convinced he's ready at our level. He is still so young and I think would benefit from playing regularly.

I think Smith and Williams could potentially form an interesting partnership - but whether the fans give Williams a chance remains to be seen. I hope so.

Fingers crossed for the new season and delighted I was too busy at the back end of last week to renew season ticket as I'll now get a 10% discount. Superb that.

Also like to say I listened to Power last night on radio Wiltshire and thought he came across very well. He's not perfect but is anyone? Also I know this will be controversial to those that work shifts etc but can't see why club would give you a ten game pick and choose season ticket. Then there will be no one at the perceived poorer games! There is still a bit of me that is nervous about him courtesy of his past business record but he came across as being passionate about his football and I liked most of what he had to say.
