CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Hard work pays off for Phillips
STRIKER Lee Phillips was delighted to get back on the scoresheet last weekend and insists his confidence has not been dented by his 13-match goal drought.
Phillips struck a brace to help the Bluebirds notch up a comfortable win at struggling Bedford Town, with the frontman finding the net for the first time since December.
Phillips says he’s been satisfied with his recent form, despite having to wait patiently to add to his tally.
“I’m coming to the end of my career and I’m always the one that wants the best for the team and for the management, and three points is the best thing,” said Phillips.
“I know they (Bedford) were bottom of the league and we were expected to win but it sets us up well for next Saturday, so I’m very happy to get the win and score two.
“The two people you have to worry about in football are the manager and the assistant and I’ve had plenty of chats with them – they’re happy with my game and I’ve been happy with how I’ve been playing.
“I’ve had a few chances and sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t, so you’ve just got to keep working hard for the team.
“There’s an old saying in football which is ‘the harder you work, the luckier you get’ – I worked hard and got the two goals, which was a bonus.”
Phillips also says that he is not worried about being one of only two out-and-out strikers at Hardenhuish Park and has paid tribute to the synergy between himself and Alan Griffin.
He said: “We’ve got a lot of options going forward. You’ve got Joe that can play up front and Corey too.
“Me and Griff have gone a great understanding with each other and it’s really come on in the last month, since I’ve come back from injury.
“It can only get better and I really enjoy playing with him. I think he feels the same, so long may it carry on and with more goals to come, hopefully.”
