Swindon keep hold of star names but miss out on Ngoo

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Alex Pritchard is still at STFC Alex Pritchard is still at STFC

SWINDON Town emerged through the January transfer window intact after a quiet deadline day at the County Ground.

There were no late approaches for star players such as Alex Pritchard, Wes Foderingham and Massimo Luongo, while those listed for loan - Dany N’Guessan and Lee Cox - failed to land a move away from the club.

The Advertiser understands Crawley Town showed an interest in taking N’Guessan but no deal was possible in the time before the transfer window shut at 11pm, though a move could be on the cards when the emergency loan window opens on February 8.

In a fans’ phone-in last night, manager Mark Cooper said he was delighted in particular to hold onto Pritchard, admitting he was aware of interest from Championship clubs in the midfieldearlier this month.

Huddersfield Town, Blackburn Rovers and Wolves are all understood to have taken a look at Pritchard but no one met parent club Tottenham’s valuation of the player.

Cooper said: “I know there was quite a bit of interest from Championship clubs earlier in January and fees spoken about with Tottenham.”

Swindon did miss out on one transfer target, however, with Liverpool youngster Michael Ngoo joining Walsall on loan until the end of the season.

Town owner Lee Power had held talks with the Reds over the potential signing of the youngster, who instead chose to join the Saddlers.

Ngoo told the Express & Star in Walsall: “The team is doing well and that’s what I like. I like playing around hungry players and at Liverpool there are a lot of hungry players. That is what brings out the best in me.”

Meanwhile, the County Ground pitch will undergo a precautionary assessment from a Football League official this morning at 8.45am prior to the visit of Oldham Athletic.

So, where are all the doom and gloom merchants who had predicted that any player who had a pulse would be leaving the club. Perhaps they would like to come back on the forum, admit they were wrong and apologise for some of the totally unwarranted abuse aimed at Lee Power.
