Chairman Lee Power bans Adver over reporter's Nile Ranger Tweet

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Saturday 12.30pm. Town fan Daniel Hunt Tweet's that he has seen Nile Ranger's kit laid out Saturday 12.30pm. Town fan Daniel Hunt Tweet's that he has seen Nile Ranger's kit laid out

SWINDON Town chairman Lee Power has banned the Adver from attending press conferences and reporting on matches at the County Ground after objecting to a Tweet by reporter Sam Morshead.

The Adver’s chief sports writer Tweeted the news that striker Nile Ranger was in the team to play Peterborough United at the County Ground on Saturday at 1.15pm – 45 minutes before the team sheets were handed to match officials.

The reporter Tweeted the information after seeing a Tweet by fan Daniel Hunt who had photographed Ranger’s shirt hanging in the dressing room during a pre-match tour of the ground at 12.30pm.

Power said: “I was told by [Town manager] Mark Cooper that [Peterborough boss] Darren Ferguson had said that they saw Sam’s Tweet and changed their team.”

Ranger scored Town’s first goal and was one of the stars in their 2-1 win. It later emerged that Ranger himself had told his 13,198 followers on Instagram that he was back in the team at 1.32pm, half an hour before the team sheets were handed in.

The Adver’s reporter had been told on Thursday by a source not connected to the senior management that Ranger was likely to feature in the game, but following conversations with a club official chose not to report on it so as not to give Peterborough an advantage.

He said: “I went along with the club’s request for the good of the team. It was only when I saw the Tweet from the fan who stated he had seen Ranger’s shirt hanging in the dressing room during a stadium tour that I Tweeted what was already being spread around.

“Once it was in the public domain I felt I had the right to report on it. It is what any reporter would do.”

The ban means that Adver staff won’t be privy to pre and post-match interviews with players and staff or be able to watch games from the press box at the County Ground.

The ban will not apply to away games, such as tonight’s visit to Stevenage or Saturday’s trip to Gillingham.

Editor Gary Lawrence spent 20 minutes on the phone with Power yesterday evening trying to get him to change his mind for the good of the fans who rely on the Adver’s coverage.

He said: “I asked him to reconsider and explained the reasoning behind Sam’s Tweet but he didn’t accept that, even when I pointed out that the player himself had spread the news on social media.

“Lee said he felt the club had felt let down but I think to ban the whole paper is an overreaction.

"I can understand that the club did not want to give Peterborough any advantage and I felt that we abided by that. It was only when the news became public that we Tweeted it and added it to our matchday live blog. That was just 45 minutes before team sheets were handed in. We can see how well Posh managed to take advantage of the news by the fact that Ranger scored after 28 minutes.

"I can respect that Lee wants to do the best for his club and the fans but I don't think banning the Adver is going to achieve that. He has steadied the club and given it a new direction since he took over but I think this is more controversy the club can do without.

“I can assure fans that Sam will still be at games, even if he has to pay to sit in the stands at the County Ground, and we will move heaven and earth to continue to provide the very best coverage of Swindon Town, both in the paper and online.”

Editor Gary Lawrence's opinion

THE Swindon Advertiser prides itself on standing up for its town and its football club.

We make sure fans know as much as possible about what goes on there because they, like us, care. We have done this for all of the club’s history because we – like the fans and unlike owners who come and go – are here for the long term.

We’ve supported the club through relegation, promotion, cup glory and Wembley heartache. We travel the long miles to away games and burn the midnight oil to ensure the reports and interviews are there for the fans to read and enjoy.

We put our money where our mouth is too. Every year for decades we have backed the club with thousands of pounds of sponsorship – there can be few firms who have been putting their hands in their pockets for as long.

But now we may be the only commercial partner in the club’s history to be banned from the County Ground.

We have been barred because the club didn’t like Sam Morshead Tweeting about Nile Ranger playing on Saturday, even though a fan and even the player himself also let the cat out of the bag.

We think the fans need to know what is going on at the County Ground and we believe we have the right to assign anyone we choose to do the reporting.

That’s why we tried our utmost yesterday to avoid this situation and that’s why we will continue to report on the club, however hard it is made for us. That’s what us fans do.

The Adver won't run it, but 'Power Mad' would be the most apt headline for this story.

How to lose friends and alienate people...this is a ridiculous over-reaction by someone who has only just taken the helm at the club. It doesn't bode well, and that's a real shame, given Cooper's progress. The banning of the media (worst example: Fergie's 7 year BBC boycott), whether by manager, chairman or owner, is always an insult to fans.

After all the goings on at the CG in recent years, I had to look at today's date before believing this story.

If Lee Power get's his drawers in a twist because of Sam's interesting but not really earth-shattering story about something already in the public domain, then he needs to sit down, take a deep breath, and think again.

Come on Lee! This is a symbiotic relationship here and you know it, so calm down and rescind your stupid decision. Oh, I forgot, you don't read social media or blogs, so I just hope somebody gives you a big nudge in the ribs.

Wonder how STFC fans would feel if Peterborough had won because the Adver's 'reporter' felt he 'had the right' to give Peterborough an advantage after all? It's a question of ethics and common sense, and the Adver let itself down on both counts.

It's a ridiculous over-reaction by Power but maybe it will unleash the Adver. I never trusted Jedda and his cowboys one bit, but the Adver refrained from digging into the situation. I don't trust Power either, given his business record of leaving creditors in the lurch. Nor do I know what his motives are because League 1 clubs are not profitable enterprises. So Adver, if the gloves are off, don't pull any punches.

There is a solution though... If STFC are banning the adver then maybe... just maybe they can provide the fans with an official site that actually gives up-to-date and accurate news and information rather than the current useless site that reports and gathers their information from the other football sites a week after they have happened and been reported. Then we wouldnt have to rely on an honest and loyal local press!

Spot on. The Adver was just doing its job. The club itself let the cat out of the bag by allowing a member of the public to know the team at 12:30. Screw up and blame somebody else. Very nice, Mr Power.

This is the second time the club has attacked the Adver in recent months. Lets hope this one encourages the paper to grow some balls and not shy away from asking important questions, like "Where is the long-promised audit report and the commentary that mere simple supporters can understand?"

Clubs that ban the local paper are always losers as the Adver gives the club thousands of pounds of free advertising each season. Often they are giving outlets to the clubs own PR.
Lee Power needs to reside in the UK fulltime rather than escaping paying British taxes or whatever reason he chooses to live in Switzerland and face the reality of building good relationships with the local media.
It seems that Sam behaved correctly. In the days of social media once something appears on it, it goes viral. Keep fighting Sam to get normal relations restored. Think Ferguson is causing mischief by saying "he changed his team". We have no proof of that!

I always love the way people talk about their local team. So how many players come from Swindon then? Or even knew where it was before their agent came to them with an offer? Its all about the money for the players and the owners, just look at that idiot who owns Cardiff FC. Football in this country is becoming a joke and our national team are beyond being a joke.

When you realise Den the club is not your property you will be able to make sense of this along with all your cronies. To many on here believe that the club belongs to them and this forum belongs to them. A timely reminder that it does not!
Let's see how the club gets on without fans or a newspaper to support it shall we. Maybe the advertiser should just stop reporting games. By the way the forum is more or less a dead duck now. This is just a comments section.

Nasty personal nonsense, ciclo. It does a man of your obvious intelligence no credit at all. Why not try civilised debate instead of making a personal attack on someone whose opinions differ from yours?

I may bore people to death on here but I have never suggested that the football club or this forum is my property. To my knowledge, nobody posting on here has ever done so either. I'll tell you one thing though: a football club is nothing without its supporters, including you, me and all other fans. Power, like McCrory, Wray, Fitton et al before him, is passing through. We do not move on. On top of this, we try to ensure that our children and grandchildren follow the STFC path.

The day I feel the need to throw personal insults at people on here because I disagree with them - and embellish those insults with meaningless rubbish about their "cronies" (presumably people who happen to share their opinion) - will be the day I know I have nothing to add to the debate.

Well, this is certainly a first, but I agree with North Stand's post above!!

Sam has been walking a tightrope over Ranger for a couple of weeks now and was bound to fall off it eventually. Sorry to say that Sam, but my post Saturday evening refers and my point 5 in particular refers below;

Den,

I appreciate your comments last night, but each of us have views on here that vary between casual, much stronger and very entrenched at the top end of the scale.

In the case of Ranger, my views are as follows;

1. WE should NOT have signed him the first place. BIG MISTAKE.

2. He does not turn up on time, if indeed at all for training.

3. He is not a team player, only a very selfish individual.

4. His forthcoming trial has little to do with Swindon Town, but is coming up fast and could only damage the club's reputation, regardless of the outcome.

5. All the premature talk of terminating his contract this week was totally incorrect, without him having a ''fair hearing''. SAM, hang your head in shame, you may well have cost Town the balance of Ranger's contract with your headlines all week. Perhaps that is why we had to keep him?

6. Several posters have recently suggested we open Stratton Bank to youngsters at a special discount, to increase attendance figures. To watch the model footballer Ranger play perhaps? What a stupid idea!!

7. Mr Power had gone up in a lot of people's opinions recently, including mine, but after playing Ranger today, Mr Power may clearly lack any sort of integrity? SHAME ON YOU MR POWER.

So Sam is wrong and may have to sit on Stratton Bank, all on his own. He can climb in without paying, like many did years ago!!

But Mr Power is absolutely wrong as well.

AND ALL THIS BECAUSE WE SIGNED RANGER!!!!!

Nothing new in football... Alex Ferguson banned reporters for just asking questions about a player..one even got banned 3 times, but was eventually let back... he never talked to BBC for years...like father like son , they have both "worked" the press to their advantage...ever been had ?

I'm pretty certain that the full impact of the tweet was not really countenanced and an unintentional error on which Ferguson junior has jumped on and "used" and must be laughing, sat on his post match couch at the furore he has caused.

If everyone remains calm it will all be sorted, if not, Fergie will have got his way and driven a wedge between the club and its supporters just in time for the JPT final...

Now if we had taken Nile out of the team at the last moment then we would have had the last laugh over Fergie who would have prepared short term for something that wasn't going to happen, they would hav ebeen in a right old pickle...glad he was there and scored though, better team for him being there.

I think you are right Super red, there could well be more to this than meets the eye.

Some reprimand or even a home match ban on Sam would have made more sense, as likely as not he probably didn't realise the consequences of his actions and a slap on the wrist would have made the point but to ban the Adver totally sounds a bit OTT, but then again we've only seen the Adver side and haven't heard any statement from the club as yet, guess we'll have to wait to hear from the BBC for that one.

I remember reading Fredi's comments that Sam was McCory's poodle writing and reporting only what Jedi fed him. Guessing now but Lee was not impressed with Jed communicating by twitter and he maybe old school and is making the point information should be reported through the proper channels and I would say providing the team selection falls into that category. When you are trying to win matches, I think it is very important not to give the opposition any edge. In the time the Italian was here, I don't think I was able to predict once what team he would be playing. Not sure how he would have reacted to find how the opposition already knew his team through the media.

6 and two 3's here really. Big over reaction by Power and banning local media, depriving the clubs supporters and primary income stream, of information and the eagerness to read up on their beloved club.
At the same time though, very clumsy by Sam. Sure, it was let out of the bag already, but that just makes it even more clumsy. After agreeing not to say anything, earning the clubs trust, why then go and make a prat of yourself and destroy that trust, when someone else had done the work for you? Are you that desperate for a scoop? Another 45 minutes and you could of spread it until your hearts desire, now you just look stupid. Such a pointless ****-up to make.

OTR see we agree about the big screen and the electronic advertising hoardings - I have to say that I didn't even notice both weren't there and I wasn't in Legends on Saturday - what else can it be but unpaid bills except to save on the lecky to keep that cost down!
IMO Power needs to tread very carefully here - most are cautiously behind him I'd say but to over react to such trivia is petty in the extreme and if he as any sense he'll sleep on it and rescind it in the morning. Aggrevating the fanbase by banning the local rag isn't the way to convince supporters that you have the club's best interests at heart, particularly as others have pointed out , the club c0cked up by displaying Rangers shirt and he himself tweeted he was in the team before Sam did.

It also means that the defence of Sam is totally incorrect from his own Editor, all the timings are wrong.

Which means that the Editor is also totally wrong and Sam is now very exposed and potentially history!!

Interestingly Sam tweeting its possible we may not have seen the last of Ranger and not ruling out he could be in contention to play tomorrow.

Well the Friday tweets werent clever if he had been sworn to secrecy. The questions should have been ignored rather than replying with 'watch this space' type of answers to 'could there be a u turn' questions

That being said why such a secret in the first place? Posh were hardly going to change their centre halves just because it's Ranger up front. The most likely alternative was N'Guessan unless they threw young Barker or Waldon in at the deep end, or a half fit Storey....all unlikely. Of more importance would have been Hall moving to left back and Branco in at centre back imo.

Even more laughable is the Ranger shirt hanging up in the changing room while Joe Public gets shown round 2 and a half hours before kick off! Naive in the extreme to expect that not to leak out!

Personally I think Sam does an excellent job, he is a decent bloke who has generally reported very well during his time. This is a non-issue in the big scheme of things. No harm was done, we won the game and I hope Power gets off his high horse tomorrow.

Quite agree. Once the damage was done, what would have been better would have been for Power to speak to the Adver and show his disappointment at the report going out without Morshead discussing it with Town first.

A more diplomatic approach would have been far better instead of this knee-jerk reaction. I expect Power must be feeling extreme pressure with his colossal undertaking in picking up the Town reins. A bit hasty, but cut him some slack, when you consider the overall picture he's had to contend with. Not easy for anyone, but there......

You are right about Wilesy's post (reference: http://www.swindonad
vertiser.co.uk/sport
/10927649.El_Gabas_m
akes_Town_exit/ ).

However, the tweet which Wilesy's referring to is where somebody asks Sam a question on Friday evening: "Hi Sam, if there is a possible u turn on ranger could this mean he could feature on Saturday ?" and Sam responds "not getting any confirmation on it but could be possible."

Well, gee, anything is possible. I'd hardly consider that to be Sam letting any cat out of the bag, and it's certainly a different conversation to the furore which has arisen over his tweet 45 mins before the game.

I think Power is being a bit of a knob, especially given EA's sponsorship and all the free coverage they generate for STFC. If Power had a problem he should have simply had a word with the Adver, banned Sam for a few games if he felt he needed to make a point, and then get back to business as usual.

But, the way Power has done it means a lot of ill-will all around, and now he'll have to look like a dick anyway if/when he has to back-track and climb down at some point. (and if he doesn't back-track then he'll continue to look like a knob in any case).

Ferguson's team had just lost an important League game, he'd had one of his best players sent off and he'd had his goalkeeping coach sent to the stands. I reckon he would have had more important things to think about than imagining that a post-match chat with his counterpart would "work the media to his advantage" and cause a rift between STFC and its supporters.

Were the advertising boards not brought in for the Chelsea game? Presumably to maximise revenue from a big televised game. It's possible that those things have minimum lease terms on them, this could be the end of the lease. Baseless speculation on my part but then again it's no worse than the "bills not paid, sky is falling" kind of baseless speculation.

When people are angry at being beaten they look for the slightest thing to spark their fightback...he was no doubt very angry at the loss for all the reasons that are obvious.... competiitive individuals always look for any way to get one over their opponents and cant stand losing... this issue was a gift horse

We'll have to agree to differ Cleuso. You really think that Ferguson would have thought "I'll speak to Cooper, Cooper will speak to his chairman, his chairman will ban the local paper, the fans will get upset with the club..." It's just too improbable.

The route cause is STFC cocked up, so the answer is to make sure the team shirts are not visible during the tours.

Blaming Sam is simply wrong, as the decision to play Nile was already tweeted and that is not mentioning the fact that Nile broadcasted he was playing (15 minutes after Sam). Will Nile also get penalised ? I doubt it.

Let's get our house in order and pull together (STFC and Swindon Advert).

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

Bills not paid \suspect, not sure if that applies to the screens in the legends as well
More bills not paid. Companies having to sue it seems to get money.
And still no sign of the audit or any explanation that we were promised from Sangita Shah- failure to produce will surely label Power with the same Bert Bullsh!t label as the previous regime.

Obviously the club was naive in allowing a supporter into the changing rooms AND allowing him to photograph the players' shirts with his mobile phone. Sam might have been a bit naive too, but this highlights the growing phenomenon of social media. Power may dislike social media, and Jedda was a bit of a knob in the way he used Twitter, but clubs had better wise up because social media channels are here to stay and are blowing away the rules, conventions and boundaries that were previously in place.

Well done LP. It is about time the media was got under control. They think they have the right to spill the beans on anything on anything they like just to get a bob or two from extra sales. They have no morals or ethics. Maybe they will start to report decent stuff now instead of all the c**p. Pure facts is what we need. Did the reporter actually see Ranger's or does he base all his reports on second hand garbage. That photo could have been taken weeks ago.

Really?

Take away the Town reports, interviews, news, etc and what's the Adver got to offer for 65p? Party propaganda from the likes of Tomlinson, Rennard and Buckland, Barry Hudson being as funny as cancer, the weekly photo update from the college site and the less regular one about the Oasis that gets fed (probably by SBC) to the Adver's political reporter in an attempt to the grandiose plans are still happening.

Even the "spot how many glaring mistakes in today's issue" game is getting boring - nothing could top the Anne Frank one last week.

There are other outlets for the Town - other newspapers, radio, TV, its own website - but the Adver needs the Town more than the club needs the Adver.

Mind you, I'd think more of the Adver if they left the space for the home match reporter blank than have Moreshead putting on his Groucho Marx glasses and false nose and trying to sneak into the County Ground, sorry, SN1. It'd be worth it for the lolz.

Teams are a closely guarded secret until the last moment so as not to give the opponents any advantage. The reporter spoiled that secrecy so he was wrong. If it happened to Swindon by another team there would be an outcry.
