NORTH Wilts ladies recorded a resounding 45-shot victory over Bristol in a women’s national inter-club team championship event.

They followed up a 28 shots success over Purnell in the opening round of the Yetton Plate with a comprehensive 96-51 win in round two against Bristol last Saturday.

North Wilts were always in control of the match leading from the outset.

Across the board they were 26-14 up at five ends and 51-23 at ten.

The advantage increased to 71-37 at 15 and they eventually won 96-51.

Both away rinks provided the backbone for victory with Alex Jacobs’ four leading 18-2 at 12 ends and finally won 33-9 while Janet Hardie’s rink led 17-5 at 13 and eventually claimed a 14 shots win.

Fizz Mace’s home rink led 17-6 at 11 but was pegged back a shade to record an eight shots success.

However, Barbara Shepheard’s quartet, despite leading 10-3 at nine ends, then dropped a seven and trailed 16-12 at 15. They hit back but were eventually pipped on the last end by a single shot.

North Wilts now face Somerset side Isle of Wedmore, who received a walk-over against Ilminster, in round three of the Yetton Plate early in the new year on January 11.

Away - Rink 6: Ann Roberts-Phare, Jane Taylor, Irene Button & Alex Jacobs beat I Hickery 33-9. Rink 7: Norma Rowden, Margaret Walker, Jean Collier & Janet Hardie beat Sue Humphries 24-10.

THE ladies hopes for success in the Mason Trophy, national Over 60 Inter Club Double Rink, are over for this season.

They went down to Thornbury A by 24 shots in a second round tie on Monday afternoon losing on both rinks as they were beaten 51-27.

Janet Hardie’s home rink led 8-4 at five ends and 12-9 at ten but then dropped two threes to trail 18-13 at 15 and eventually lost by five shots.

But away in Thornbury Fizz Mace’s rink were always struggling trailing 6-2 at five ends, 15-4 at ten, 20-8 at 15 and finally lost by 19 shots.

NORTH Wilts men made a disastrous start to their 2013/14 Wesssex League campaign last Sunday.

They crashed to a surprise 20-shot defeat at the hands of Purnell (Paulton) in their first central region fixture as they went down 86-66.

Wilts lost on three rinks and only saved a whitewash as Dave Williams’ rink at home at Westcroft managed to draw 20-20 and grab the only point out of a possible 16.

Trevor Cooke’s rink were edged out away in Paulton by a single shot while Chris Brown went down at home by only four however away Max Clark’s four suffered a heavy 15 shots loss.

North Wilts face an extremely tough next central group match on Sunday, December 8, as they are due to meet reigning Wessex League play-off champions Clarrie Dunbar.

Home: Dave Williams drew with Mike Pratt 20-20. Chris Brown lost to B Gaye 13-17. Away: Max Clark lost to Donald Dart 9-24. Trevor Cooke lost to B Richards 24-25.

Score: North Wilts 66 (1pt) Purnell 86 (15pts).

WILTSHIRE men produced a fine performance last Saturday to beat Gloucestershire in the first round of the inter-county championship.

They led all the way at MidGlos (Brockworth) in the away Liberty Trophy tie to claim a 14 shot success as they ran-out 135-121 victors.

Wiltshire were 34-25 up across the board at five ends and 66-49 at ten. That was increased to 102-75 at 15 before hosts Gloucestershire hit back to cut the final score line to 135-121 at 21 ends.

The Moonrakers took the honours on four of the six rinks - the only two defeats being suffered by the all-North Wilts rink led by Wayne Snook and Andy Moore’s all-Christie Miller rink who both lost by ten shots.

Snook was 7-2 down at five ends but only trailed 12-11 at ten. However at 15 was 21-15 down, 24-16 adrift at 18 and finally lost by ten.

Moore’s rink were tied 11-11 at ten and 16-16 at 15 ends but trailed 23-18 at 18 and never scored again to lose 28-18.

“Very pleased with the performance and result,” said Wilts team manager Neil Smith. “I always believed we could be competitive so delighted we could get the result against a decent Gloucester side.”

Wiltshire will now meet their nemesis Somerset, who have beaten them both times in the Liberty Trophy in the past two years, at home at North Wilts, Chippenham in round two (last 16) on Saturday, January 11..
