JAMES Guthrie says he does not want to leave Chippenham Town to join Swindon Supermarine.

The Bluebirds winger became the subject of a seven-day approach from his former Highworth Town manager Dave Webb last Friday but the 22-year-old is planning to stay with the Bluebirds.

“I wasn’t particularly expecting it. I get on well with Webby because he was my manager at Highworth so he probably saw it as a bit of an opportunity with things being a bit up in the air at Chippenham,” said Guthrie.

“But I want to be at Chippenham. I’ve been here a few years now and I want to help push us up the league.

“I’m not the type of lad that bows out when we’re not doing great. I’ll probably have a chat with Webby as a common courtesy because he’s a top bloke but I want to be at Chippenham and play at the highest standard possible.”

Guthrie also says he is looking forward to working under new boss Mark Collier and thinks Chippenham sent out a message to the rest of the Premier Division by beating high-flying Cambridge City last weekend.

“When the new gaffer comes in, it gives everyone a lift because you’re playing for your places and you want to show that you’re a good player,” he said.

“I’ve never worked under Mark before but I knew of him and I know his son. I know he did well at Supermarine, that he’s a obviously a good manager.

“Everyone showed good energy in training last Thursday and took that into Saturday’s game – it came off and we got a great 1-0 win.

“On paper, it wasn’t the most ideal game to come in after the results we’ve been getting but we just proved that we have been under-performing and we are a better team than we are in the league.

“I think we sent out a bit of a warning to the league.”
