WOOTTON Bassett celebrated a glittering weekend as they maintained top spot in the Davis Wood League East Central One division and made progress in the Hockey Association Vase.

Bassett entered Saturday’s league match with Chippenham B having scored 21 goals in their first three matches, but by the final whistle had doubled that tally in a 21-1 massacre.

Eleven goals for Kyle Barnes and hat-tricks for Matt Daniell and player of the match Mark Skivington led the way.

Tom Ponting converted a short corner and Mark Tolley also scored in the first half, and the rout continued after the break, an own goal and Mark Turner adding to the tally.

Tim McKendrick netted a late consolation goal for Chippenham.

Bassett progressed to the second round of the Vase with a 3-1 win over a Wotton-under-Edge side from two divisions higher on Sunday.

Despite a number of early chances, Bassett trailed to a Wotton strike shortly before half-time, but hit back in the second period.

Tolley picked out Turner for the leveller and the visitors’ pressure told again as Daniell finished with a sweetly-struck reverse strike.

Progress was secured as Dan Stanley’s shot was well saved but Turner picked up the rebound and fired home.

Marlborough also made Vase progress with a 5-2 win over Bridgwater.

Awarded a penalty stroke, Anil Sud converted to give the hosts the lead, but Bridgwater levelled before half-time.

Some of Marlborough’s best hockey of the season saw them restore their lead when John Bromley smashed home a rebound from a short corner.

Bridgwater were left short-handed by a red card and Marlborough took advantage, captain Rich Holman producing a stupendous lob to take his side 3-1 in front.

Sud converted a second penalty stroke and, despite a Bridgwater response, Sud combined with Gareth Playfair for an easy tap-in.

Marlborough are still searching for their first win in Conference North after a 4-1 defeat to Newent on Saturday.

Bromley swept home a late consolation from a well-worked short corner for the Wiltshire men.

Devizes’ unbeaten start in Central One came to an end with a 3-2 home defeat to Robinsons B.

Trailing to a goal near the end of the first half, Devizes imploded and were down to eight players through poor discipline.

Nevertheless, they bagged an equaliser when Ollie Smith pounced on a loose ball and slotted past the keeper.

Another error gave Robinsons the advantage but Roger Edwards stepped up to flick home before the visitors lobbed a late winner.

Chippenham were defeated 5-4 by Firebrands B, while Wootton Bassett A lost 5-2 to Wotton-under-Edge A in East Central One on Saturday, Stu Bell and John Devlin on target.

Bassett’s B side lost 2-0 to Chippenham D in East Central Two, Charlie May and Ben Knowlden scoring.

  • DEVIZES made it three wins in a row in the West Clubs League Wessex One division as they claimed a narrow victory at county rivals West Wilts 2nd.

The visitors, led by attacking runs from Caitlin Maclean, and strong play from Nicky Wicks and Laura North, did most of the attacking but were unable to find a way through.

Eventually, the pressure told as the ball was stopped on the line by a foot and North stepped up to fire home the penalty flick.

Chippenham slipped to their second successive defeat in Premier Division 2A as they lost out 2-1 to Team Bath Buccaneers 2nd at home. Rhiannon Roberts scored for the home side.

Marlborough’s unbeaten start in the North Division was brought to a halt by a 4-3 defeat at Leominster.

The visitors found themselves 2-1 down at half-time, Catherine Manley netting in between the two Leominster strikes.

Clare Griffiths levelled for a second time before Manley scored again to give her side the lead.

But Leominster fought back to take the points.

In the same division, a Tegan Buchanan goal was not enough to prevent Wootton Bassett from losing 5-1 at home to Bristol University 2.

In Wessex Two, Chippenham 3 romped to a 9-0 win over Wootton Bassett 3, Sunniva Petersen scoring four times.

Mary Derrick and Helen Franklin added doubles with Kate Potter also on target.

Wootton Bassett 2nd stayed top of the section, Kelly Lusted netting the only goal against Frome 2nd.

Megan Hand, Leigh Page, Beth McCandlish and Samantha Jennings all scored twice, Sapphire Randerson also on target as Chippenham 4th thrashed Winscombe 3rd 9-0 in Wessex Three.
