MONTIRIDGE swooped late and fast to lift the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes for the Richard Hannon team at Glorious Goodwood today, the Wiltshire trainer's 250th winner at the track.

Champion jockey Richard Hughes sat towards the rear of the field early on in the mile heat as Glory Awaits set a strong early gallop, chased by Well Acquainted and the Godolphin pair of Snowboarder and Tawhid.

Tawhid struck for home a furlong out as Glory Awaits faded out of it, with the 2000 Guineas third getting a little squeezed for room between the Godolphin runners.

Hughes steered a clear course down the outside, however, with Montiridge picking up in style to oblige by a length and a quarter as the 5-6 favourite.

Collingbourne Ducis handler Hannon was notching up his 250th winner at the track and his son and assistant Richard is now pointing towards some top-level targets.

The latter said: "He pulled a lot before but he's starting to get a bit more of a racing brain and is relaxing and settling which makes his job a lot easier. He travelled well all through the race.

"We've gone the quiet route with him, Listed races and stepped up rather than going straight in, but I think he's up to it on that evidence.

"Races like the Moulin and QEII (could come under consideration), all sorts of races.

"He's stays in training next year which is what we want."
