WOOTTON Bassett men are just one match away from reaching the final stages in the National Top Club competition for the first time.

Bassett produced a majestic performance last Thursday on the neutral green at Spencer Moulton (Bradford-on-Avon) in the Wiltshire and Dorset area final to book their place in the last 16 of the national competition.

It followed successes over Wanborough, Westlecot B, Purton, Chippenham Town 3-2 and Holt in the county section.

They took the honours on all five disciplines – two and four wood singles, pairs, triples and fours – to whitewash top Dorset side Greenhill (Weymouth) 5-0 in the area final.

After Richard Buckland gave Bassett a winning start in the two wood singles they were never really troubled with the triples and fours teams skipped by Gary Morphet and Dave Snell respectively registering big wins.

Bassett now move forward to the inter-area final against Hampshire and Isle of Wight area winners Southsea Waverley (Portsmouth) with a place in the final stages (last eight) at Royal Leamington Spa in mid-September the prize for the winners.

The match against Southsea Waverley has to be played on a neutral green before August 30.
