MALMESBURY ended the unbeaten start of Surridge Sport Wiltshire League Division One leaders Urchfont as they edged home by three runs.

The home side won the toss and batted, making 184-8 as James Gillespie scored 51. Richard Gaunt’s bowling proved a decisive factor as he took 4-47, Urchfont’s reply following just short at 181.

Purton stormed to the top of the table after securing an emphatic nine-wicket victory over Hinton Charterhouse.

Hinton appeared in reasonable shape at 103-3 but then managed only 12 runs for the loss of the next six wickets.

The hosts eventually finished on 129 all out, opener Richard Newport top-scoring on 44.

Purton’s overseas player Akarshit Gomel did the damage with the ball, claiming 6-18.

In reply, opener Phil Duffell was caught on the third ball he faced but Gomel (71) and Tom Bowler (51) stepped in to easily see the visitors home.

An impressive 91 not out from opener Sam Lawro was enough for Wootton Bassett to get back to winning ways as they beat Swindon NALGO by four wickets.

The home side bowled first and managed to bowl the Swindon side out for 163, with Ian Lancaster returning figures of 5-32.

Lawro’s innings allowed Bassett to reach their target for the loss of only six wickets inside 30 overs. Coach Shaz Khan said: “It was a great game for us to win, especially after not getting off to the best start this season.

“Sam led from the front, which is always important, and he played really nicely because he has been batting extremely well over the last four games.’’ The bowlers were on top as Swindon Civil Service claimed a four-wicket triumph over Beanacre & Melksham, who were bowled out for 75.

After reaching 45-2 in 20 overs, visiting Beanacre collapsed to 75 all out off 36 overs, with only Joe Veacock (19) and Chris Singh (11*) reaching double figures.

The reply started with five consecutive maidens, but Beanacre also dropped four catches as Service cruised to 57-1 off 26.

However, they quickly lost five wickets before limping home in the 36th over, the picking of the bowling coming from Ben Brown (3-16 off 12) and Dean Wallington (3-20 off six).

Tony Laws’ first career hat-trick proved a highlight of Bradford on Avon’s nine-wicket triumph over struggling Spye Park.

Winning the toss, Bradford’s opening bowlers Matthew Harrington (3-13) and Laws (5-46) dismissed Park for 67 in 26.1 overs.

Openers James Edwards (22) and Ian Pinchen(38 not out) posted a 50 partnership in the ninth over and, despite losing Edwards in the 11th, Bradford raced home in the 16th.

Division Two

FIRST team debutant Shankar Alva helped guide Collingbourne to a 120-run triumph over Warminster 3rd.

Put into bat, Collingbourne reached 240-6, thanks mainly to a partnership of 95 between Jack King (32) and Owen Sheppard’s unbeaten 111, Cameron Wright adding 42 and Bertie Rogers 35.

The good work continued with the ball, the returning Jon Candler (2-12 from seven overs) and Alva (3-36 from seven) ripped through the top order, leaving Warminster on 56-6.

Despite some resistance, Colliingbourne skipper Jon Cummings successfully rotated his bowlers, Archie Scott, King, Sheppard and Ollie Scott sharing the remaining wickets.

Mark McMeeking’s 5-15 from 12 overs rescued an unlikely win for Wroughton Wranglers against Westinghouse.

Wranglers were dismissed for just 85, Jordan Welsby taking 3-17, Andy Day 3-23 and Curtis Welsby 2-14 for Westinghouse. But the Chippenham side’s innings collapsed to just 69 as McMeeking ripped through the order.

Division Three

WILCOT dismissed leaders Bear Flat for the lowest total of the summer so far (146) courtesy of an inspired spell from Charlie Maidment (5-15 off 6.3 overs), Graham Smith (2-18) and Hamish Fyfe (1-22).

There were also sharp catches from Alistair Fyfe, taking three chances and Ally (2) and Jamie Guerin.

The reply opened with steady partnerships between Ed James and Jamie Guerin (33) and Guerin and Russell Spencer.

But, needing to quicken the run rate, Guerin was needlessly run out and Fyfe went for 16.

A strong hitting cameo from Ally Guerin kept the result in the balance but an excellent spell from Chris Bence (4-23) restricted Wilcot to 125-8 off their 45 overs.

Beehive bounced back from the previous week’s loss to Avebury in style against Biddestone 3rd.

Put in to bat, Clive Warren (114) and Neil Harber (106) put on an opening stand of 238, Mike Spong chipping in with a rapid 40* to take Beehive to 299-2 off the allotted 45 overs.

James Hall was the pick of the Beehive bowling (3-28 off 12 overs), Terry Evans also taking two quick wickets as Biddestone were all out for 177.

Dave Rolls scored 54 and Nick Stacey 42, but Seagry's Allan Norman took 4-8 in 10.3 overs and Josh Hugo 5-15 in six before Steve Thompsett scored 60 to help guide Seagry to victory.

Division 4

THREE members of Potterne’s U15s’ side featured prominently in the third XI’s 139-run victory over Malmesbury 2nd.

George Elliott scored 65, Stan Alsop took 3-4 from six overs and Josh Hodder 3-13 from 7 overs.

Not to be outdone, the older players also shone, Mark Colyer with 70* and Andrew Hillier’s 65 helped Potterne to 263-5.

Rikki Jackson took 3-31 and three catches as Malmesbury were bowled out for 123 Mark Lazenby almost single-handedly secured Wootton Bassett 2nd’s nine-wicket victory over Trowbridge A.

Lazenby took 9-26 in just 8.5 overs, including a hat-trick, as Trowbridge were dismissed for just 57 and Pete Ellis’ unbeaten 39 steered Bassett home for the loss of one wicket.

Jonathan Helps guided Beanacre & Melksham 2nd to 193-8 against Corsham 4th, Tom Watling (24) and Matt Hunt (23) also chipping in.

Corsham made a solid start to the reply, but Chris Long and Tom Watling restricted them to 53 runs off 24 overs, Watling finishing with 6-31 off 12 and Long 1-21.

Division 5

BRADFORD on Avon 2nd copied their first team with an emphatic nine-wicket win over struggling Spye Park 2nd.

Winning the toss, Bradford skipper Danny Hall inserted Spye and had instant success as he took two wickets in his first over and finished his first spell with figures of 3-4 from eight overs.

Sam Edwards (4-18), playing his first game of the season, kept the batting tied down as Spye were all out for 88 in the 39th over.

Paul Wilson (22*) and Hall’s unbeaten 61 saw Bradford easily home in the 18th over.

Division 6

COLLINGBOURNE 2nd fell short in their clash with Biddestone 4th.

Losing the toss for the 5th time, Collingborne were asked to bat and found themselves in trouble at 27-3.

Dave Gale (22) and Karl Gingell (21) started to repair the damage, but wickets fell at all the wrong times and Collingbourne were 86-6 before a seventh-wicket stand of 47 between Tom Edmonds (38) and Harry Brown (24) saw them end at 150-9.

Young openers Ryan Proud and Harry Brown, and old heads of Jon Aitken(12-4-41-3) and Mark Brett(12-5-19-1), had the game in the balance at 97-5 at the end of the 35th over of the reply before Biddestone ran out as four-wicket winners.

Division 7

WINSLEY 3rd proved too strong for a young Devizes 3rd side.

Veteran Stephen Chalke took 4-15 in 11 overs to reduce the home side to 49-6.

Paul Rhys, with 28, took the total to 96, but on a good pitch it was not enough.

Matt Wheeldon scored 37 as Winsley won by five wickets.

A good start on a difficult track saw Boomsbury pass 50 before losing a wicket against Burbage 3rd.

Nick Cranston with 5-22 then cut through the middle order, before a steadying partnership saw them to a challenging 151-8.

In reply, Burbage made stuttering progress, losing three late wickets before sneaking home by one wicket.

Division 8

FOOTBALLERS Andy Sandell and Alan Griffin played key roles as Goatacre 4th defeated Wanborough 2nd by 157 runs.

Sandell, who helped Newport County into the Football League last month, scored 111 as Goatacre scored 291-5, Chippenham Town striker Alan Griffin and Dave Horton 52 apiece, Wanborough being dismissed for 134.

A trip to Calne 3rd proved difficult for Beehive 2nd as they went down by seven wickets.

Calne won the toss and put Beehive in, Jeremy Prewster (26), James Dennison (23) and Ash Rendall (19) proving the mainstays of their 103 all out.

Calne got home for the loss of three wickets, Tom Morley making 39 despite 2-27 from Dennison and Craig Hill’s 1-32.
