TEENAGER Jack Charman has served up a storm at North Wilts golf club after winning the Wiltshire County Championship on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, who works as a trainee cook at the club near Bishops Cannings, became county champion as he shot two rounds of 70 at Wrag Barn, seeing off the challenge of Marlborough’s Ben Amor, the only other player to finish under par.

Charman’s title-winning performance also earned him a spot on the Wiltshire team for next month’s South West Championships at Dudsbury, in Ferndown, Dorset, and the new county champ says that he’s had to put any shyness to one side at his club this week.

“I’m usually quite shy but I’ve had to forget about that because everyone at the club knows who I am now.’’ said Charman, who lives in Devizes.

“I’ve had lots of people coming up to me to say ‘well done’ and it’s been really nice,”

“It was the third year that I’ve been in the county championships. Last year I finished sixth but this year, I just played really well and it was enough to win the trophy.

“It’s definitely the biggest thing I’ve ever won. Last year I became club champion at North Wilts but I won’t be around to defend the title this year because I’ll be at South West Week with the county lads.

“I’m really happy to be a part of the team because I’ve never been before. I’m mates with a few of the Wiltshire guys but I’ve only been in the team a few times.”
