TROWBRIDGE & DISTRICT LEAGUE KNOCKOUT CUP: Ten-man Boomsbury suffer cup exit
1:00pm Monday 4th February 2013 in Sport
MELKSHAM Town Reserves and Boomsbury are no strangers when it comes to meeting each other in the Chantry Digital Ltd-sponsored Knockout Cup.
Their meeting at the Conigre in a delayed second-round tie was the third time the teams have been paired together in as many seasons.
Melksham edged out Ben Howe’s side 3-2 in the 2010/11 final and last term, Boomsbury’s 2-0 success over Melksham in the last four denied them a place in back-to-back finals.
So there was everything to play for in the third cup meeting of the sides as they battled to set up a quarter-final meeting with either The Fleece of Levi’s FC and it was Steve Burns' hosts who progressed to the next round thanks to another 3-2 success.
Melksham were outstanding in the first half as they gave Boomsbury the runaround and really should have been four or five goals in front.
But all they had to show for their dominance was a Lee Fielding effort that gave them a 1-0 interval lead.
After the break Boomsbury were much improved and got themselves back on level terms thanks to a Mike Grieve free kick.
Once in the ascendancy they took the lead thanks to Dan Dominy who headed home a Darren Jones cross to put Howe’s men 2-1 up.
The game swung back in Melksham’s favour when Boomsbury were reduced to 10-man, Scott Phillips seeing red for foul and abusive language towards the referee.
From the resulting free kick Josh Robinson restored parity for the hosts who made their extra man count as they were able throw players forward in search of a winner which came from Jordan Evans who turned the ball home to seal a deserved 3-2 win for the home side.
