DEVIZES’ strong first-half showing proved more than enough to secure a bonus-point Southern Counties South success at local rivals Royal Wootton Bassett.

In what was Dave Martin’s first match as Bassett’s new captain the visitors started strongly and were three tries to the good at the break as their forwards took control.

The front row of Tom Reed, John Angell and Steve Rowbotham held the upper hand and the pack were rewarded when James Gaiger burrowed over after a scrum on the Bassett five metre line.

Paul Kuipers was next on the scoresheet for his secnd try of the season after some fine back row work before outside centre Nick Balls crossed.

Andy Thompson hit three conversions and a penalty to give the Saddlebacks a 24-0 advantage.

Bassett registered with a try as vice-captain Phil Bardwell crashed over from close range and Dave Hogg added the conversion after half time, but man of the match Gaiger sealed the win with his second.
