VOLLEYBALL: Court queen Yasmin set fair with Loughborough call
POULSHOT teenager Yasmin Kaashoek has her sights set on reaching the top of the volleyball world.
The 13-year-old Lavington School pupil already trains once a month with the England Cadet (U16) squad and is the youngest selected to take part in the Youth Sport Trust’s National Talent Camp next year.
The 6ft tall youngster, who plays adult volleyball in the National League for Team Bath and the Wiltshire Mavericks, will visit Loughborough University on January 3-6 to get a taste of the life of Olympic competitors.
“In the last year, I’ve really pushed myself to do as well as I can and I’ve taken some big steps to the next level,” she said.
Kaashoek has represented the South of England at the last two UK School Games and also plays for Devizes.
She said: “I’ve been training with England for three or four months and it’s been an amazing opportunity.
“I’ve realised that I just want to take my volleyball as far as I can.
“My dream is to be an Olympian.’’ Dad Hans, whose son Yordi, 11, plays football for Swindon Town’s Academy, is chairman of Devizes Volleyball Club.
He said: “Yasmin has done really well recently and she’s really made an effort to push herself to the next level.”
Kaashoek is not the only recent success story at Lavington School.
Gymnast Chloe Daykin clinched victory on the beam in the British Junior Challenge Cup event in Aldershot.
Meanwhile, Scott Martin has been selected for Bath Rugby’s U15 academy after coming through trials and a two-day training camp.
“This is a great opportunity for me to have a chance of hopefully one day playing professional rugby, which has been my dream since I started playing rugby for Devizes RFC when I was seven,’’ he said.
