SWINDON TOWN: Headlines don't faze Storey
6:00am Wednesday 5th December 2012 in Sport Exclusive By Sam Morshead
Swindon Town's Miles Storey
MILES Storey is not bothered by seeing his name in headlines, as the young striker learns to deal with the local spotlight focusing on his embryonic career.
After progressing through the youth-team set-up at the County Ground, Storey broke into manager Paolo Di Canio’s matchday squads earlier this season and then burst to the forefront of Robins-related conversation with a goal at Stevenage, two strikes against Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup and an England Under 19 summons last month.
Di Canio was upset that the 18-year-old was dominating stories across the Swindon media, stressing that the “hype” would do little to help his forward’s development.
Storey recognises that he has a long way to go before he becomes the rounded footballer he craves to be, however, and he emphasised that he has no problem dealing with the limelight.
“Obviously it’s nice that people recognise you’re doing alright and you’re doing well,” he said.
“I don’t feel the pressure because I don’t feel any different to how I did two months ago when I was just involved in squads.
“I’ll just carry on playing my football and trying to improve. I don’t really mind it to be fair, I’l have a little read and some people give me a bit of stick on Twitter but you’re always going to get that.
“People are always going to try to shoot you down.
“I try to have a bit of banter with it.”
Since the clash with Villa, Di Canio has used Storey sparingly in League One, handing the youngster a combined total of just 73 minutes in the games leading up to now.
However, Storey revealed that the Italian continues to impart his advice to him in public and he is trying to use that knowledge and experience to better himself as a player.
“He’s just been saying to work hard in training and listen to his advice, which I know I’ve got to do anyway,” he said.
“I haven’t really done anything in the game yet. I’ve still got a lot to learn. There’s a lot of games to come in the season and I just want to try hard in training and improve, because there are a lot of areas I need to improve.
“The fitness that we’ve done means you do feel sharper when you’re on the pitch.
“As I’ve been involved a bit more in the last couple of games I feel I can run that extra channel or make that last run.
“My movement is getting better so I’m really looking forward to working hard and getting whatever game time I can.”

Most of the clamour for Storey to play is driven by his brief - but admittedly exciting - performance against Aston Villa. He hasn't done a great deal in his other appearances. It takes time for young players to get used to the rigorous nature of League football. (We have even seen several older players in the last couple of years who couldn't cope with it at all because they had never been exposed to this type of football before.) PDC clearly thinks that Storey should be brought along gradually. I'm inclined to agree with that. He may have bags of potential but he would be nowhere near first choice for me.
I think he has actually looked good when he has played. I remember seeing him early last season against Crawley away coming on as a sub, and he looked fantastic then as well.
I do agree with the slow approach though. But if he keeps up his goalscoring rate, don't expect the fans to be pleased to see him on the bench

Sadly people don't grasp the concept of progression and the step up from Div 2.

To move from a poor L2 to L1 is adjusting and ok we have lost to some poor teams this season but we did as well last season and Di Canio will get it right and i have faith still we will be top 6 by the end of the season.
Phone the doctor Angolan Red and get your self looked at or are you worried you may be sectioned they might even lock you up and throw away the key.

Totally off the subject , I had to laugh at a story in one of the red top tabloids this morning claiming Watford & Bristol City are chasing ex Swindon Town striker Thomas Dossevi , he quots " I am looking for a club in the championship , it suits my game " :-D . I recon blue square is more your level mate.

Grim, I thought Dossevi always tried hard but didn't seem to have a clue what he was supposed to be doing. I wasn't trying to make a case for him. After looking promising at first, he turned out to be useless.

You lot think pdc is god and everything that he has done at STFC has been spot on...?
Any manager with his budget would have won div 4 last season and they would not have wasted loads of money on shat players by given to them 2 year contract and used over 30 players.

PDC has a go at some of the players for their attitude but is it any wonder some of them lack belief when he doesn't trust them to play football? After the break we've had, I would normally be chomping at the bit to see us play again, but to be honest the break has been a relief. I'm just hoping PDC has used it to have a rethink. Somehow I doubt it though.
Hang on not another player saying he listens to Paolo?

Completely agree with Paolo that we shouldn't rush him or expect too much but I feel he has shown plenty on and off the field to deserve an increasing introduction to the club.
We have introduced other youngsters successfully like Nathan Thompson oh, and a lad called Rogers a few years back :)

mancrobin wrote:Fair play chaps. I think there may be more agreeing with you than agreeing with me. It's just that I believe PDC is right to be careful and I don't think Storey is ready to be a regular in the starting line-up yet. And the fact that Thompson and Rogers made the step up easily does not mean the same would apply to any others. If we put our minds to it, I reckon we could all name a lot more youth players who were blooded early and didn't make the grade, probably because they weren't good enough but also perhaps because they weren't ready and they had the stuffing knocked out of them. There are many things PDC says and does that I disagree with. I'm backing his judgment on this one.

The bit I don't understand is why after the Stevenage start then Villa cameo he has been used so little. If our other strikers were banging them in then fair enough, but they're not, and Miles must have been full of confidence, particularly after the England call-up, yet in comes an unfit Martin, and Miles is back down the pecking order.
I agree with bringing him in gradually, and whilst I'm sure Paolo would have been fuming after the 'Miles Storey day' in the Adver, the combination of Williams and Storey looked very promising they were running the Villa defence ragged, so think what they could do against League 1 teams.
Still we may not find out as clearly Paolo doesn't fancy that combination.

I agree that Williams and Storey sounds a good combo and assumed listening to reports of his Yeovil exploits that Williams was an out and out striker. Maybe Paolo should give him that role with Storey feeding in the channels. However, still think Benno and Miles would have been the real deal.
