CHIPPENHAM TOWN: Prepare for the Poppies

GOAL hero Tom Knighton has urged Chippenham Town not to blow a glittering week by becoming the first league victims of crisis-torn Kettering Town on Saturday.

Knighton took his tally to three in three Bluebirds’ appearances with a double in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over AFC Totton, having opened his Town account with an overhead kick in Saturday’s 2-0 win at St Albans.

The former Yate Town man’s arrival has been a catalyst for a dramatic change in Chippenham’s fortunes, from looking nervously over their shoulders at the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division drop zone to being three points outside the play-off places in a matter of days.

The arrival of the financially-stricken and winless Poppies this weekend appears to offer a golden chance to cement that progress, but having helped mastermind an FA Cup shock over Conference side Newport while at Yate, Knighton, 24, knows Town must be on their guard.

“Before I signed people were saying ‘you’ve signed for them and they’re struggling as well’ but it’s mad how it turns in two games,’’ he said.

“All of a sudden, people talk about promotion whereas two weeks ago it was about relegation battles.

“Football is a strange game and it can change in a week, which it has done.

“You just have to look at what happened to Yate when we went away and beat Newport and that says it all.

“Anything can happen and anyone can beat anyone else.

“We’re not going to take them (Kettering) lightly. We can’t be complacent.

“We’ve got a good chance to get another three points and hopefully get in those play-off places and stay there.

“I think we have got a hard run after the Kettering game, with tough away games so we’re not getting too excited about it. It’s only two wins and we’ve got to keep going.’’
