Josephine White

Josephine Edwina White, 91, of Royal Wootton Bassett, was a Royal British Legion poppy seller and stalwart supporter for many years.

Many friends and neighbours attended a thanksgiving service for her life, at St Bartholomew's Church, where the Rev David Woodhouse of Swindon officiated.

In recalling Jo's sporting interests, he spoke of her enthusiasm for football, her years as a West Ham supporter and her delight at seeing their captain, Bobby Moore, holding aloft the World Cup in 1966. She also loved to watch rugby, and cricket, and was an Essex cricket fan.

Jo used to recall wartime London, when she saw the sky filled with bombers above the Thames.

In 1951, Jo and Peter were married at Avebury. Their only son, Philip, was born in 1956.

Jo possessed many skills, which ranged from embroidery to bread making. She was a very independent lady, and had worked for years as a telephonist.

Sadly early in 1987 Peter died aged 60.

Jo continued to live an active life, was involved in various local interests and cared for a succession of cats and dogs, many acquired from an animal sanctuary.

She often looked after friends' pets, when they were on holiday. She enjoyed regular trips with her neighbours, for shopping and social events.

Father David said: "Now she is not with us physically, her presence in the household of God is a free gift,, with a promise of space and time for each of us."

A favourite poem was read by Denise Bray, and hymns All Things Bright and Beautiful and Onward Christian Soldiers were sung. The service was followed by cremation.

Philip welcomed everyone to share refreshments and further reminiscences at The Crown Hotel after the service.
