Ivy Garrett, formerly Roberts, died at the age of 102 in Fallowfields Care Home in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight, after a short illness on February 7.

She leaves behind three children John, Margaret and Susan, three grandchildren Sarah, Nicola and Jamie and eight grandchildren.

Born Ivy Plank on June 23, 1912 in West Lavington, Mrs Garrett was the middle daughter of seven girls.

She went to school in Devizes before becoming a student nurse at St Martin’s Hospital in Bath.

It was there that she met her first husband Arthur Roberts, who was in the RAF. The couple married in 1933 and lived in Netheravon and then Devizes.

Mrs Garrett, known as Robbie, became nursing assistant at Ivy House Maternity Home and then a senior nurse at St James Hospital.

She worked there for almost 20 years until she retired in 1972.

She then met her second husband Alfred Garrett and the couple married in Devizes registry office in 1972.

Mrs Garrett played tennis in her youth and after retiring she enjoyed reading, crosswords and the television.

The family moved to Bath and Corsham before emigrating to Australia in 1980.

She spent 12 years there but following the death of her second husband she returned to Devizes in 1992.

She celebrated her 100th birthday at Fallowfields, with a big party that family, residents and care staff attended. She was the care home’s first centenarian.

As well as a card from the Queen Mrs Garrett received one from Iain Duncan-Smith, minister of work and pensions, as well as many others from family and friends across the world.

Her funeral was held at West Wiltshire crematorium in Semington on Tuesday and her family are looking to buy a garden seat in her memory for Fallowfields.

Any donations to this, if desired, should be sent to Fallowfields Care Home.
