WANNABE engineers at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy have again snaffled a prestigious award – for the second year in a row.

Year 9 pupils received the most innovative concept gong in the final Go4Set competition, run by the educational group EDT South West, in recognition of their commitment to science, technology, engineering and maths.

Sarah Day, co-ordinator of key stage four design and technology, said: “We had two teams of pupils who worked with engineers from real companies on a live brief every Wednesday.

“The winning team from the club worked with TE Connectivity in Swindon and their brief was to design a sustainably engineered sports stadium.

“The pupils involved took their model and presented their idea at the final Go4Set competition run by EDT South West and won the award for the most innovative concept.

“They had a fantastic concept which involved solar panels, wind power, rain water harvesting and piezoelectric crystals, which generated electricity from movement around the stadium.

“The pupils worked really hard every week with the mentors from industry and then independently outside of school to improve their project. They really deserved this award and will make fantastic engineers themselves in the future.”

Last year 12 students brought home a silver trophy as well as their qualifications after being recognised by their peers in the national inter-school competition.
