TWO cyclists were seriously injured in a head-on collision with a van near Royal Wootton Bassett.

A man and woman were hurt in the crash, which took place on the A3102, Swindon Road, near The Sally Pussey’s Inn at 1.30pm.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene, including the air ambulance, with both casualties taken to Southmead Hospital, Bristol, for treatment.

The male cyclist is believed to have suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We were called at 1.30pm by the ambulance service after a serious road traffic collision.

“A van come into collision with the cyclists.

“We shut the road immediately on the A3102 between Junction 16 of the M4 and Royal Wootton Bassett at the public house.

“The two cyclists sustained injuries and both were flown to Southmead Hospital.

“The female was unconscious when we attended the scene but has since come round. We do not have identification on either of the casualties at this stage.”

It is understood that the man suffered head and back injuries in the incident while the driver of the white van wasn’t injured in the collision.

Police officers were at the scene for several hours after the incident carrying out investigations.

Motorists had to find alternatives routes following the collision and the road is due to be re-opened shortly.
