TRIBUTES have been paid to an inspirational and popular former PE teacher who has died suddenly.

Iain Perkins, of Wanborough, taught at Nova Hreod for his entire career, working with hundreds of pupils who have since been paying their respects online.

Throughout his career, the 63-year-old dedicated many hours of his own time to organise activities for several generations of children, including organising the Swindon Schools Cross Country Championship for many years.

His popularity was demonstrated four years ago when he was nominated to be a torchbearer prior to the London Olympics.

Iain was selected and in May 2012 he ran through the packed streets of Marlborough with the flame.

Growing up in the region, he attended St Paul’s College in Cheltenham before taking up his first teaching post at Burna Hreod where he stayed for 35 years before retiring.

In a statement, his former colleagues at Nova Hreod said: “We were devastated to hear of the sudden loss of Iain Perkins.

“Many of our former students will have fond memories of “Perky”.

“Iain was dedicated to sport and as well as being Head of PE at Burna, Parkway and Nova Hreod, he gave up a lot of his own time to organise sporting activities and events such as the Swindon Cross Country Championship, which he ran for over 35 years.

“A keen rugby player, he took 300 students to Twickenham every year for the Varsity rugby match.

“In 2012, Iain was nominated by his colleagues to carry the Olympic Torch for his long service and contribution to sport, which he proudly carried through the streets of Marlborough.

“Perky lived life to the full and inspired others to do the same. He will be sorely missed by his colleagues and former students and our condolences go out to his family.”

As well as teaching, Iain was a big fan of rugby and spent many years as a member of Cirencester RFC.

In a statement, the club said: “It is with great sadness that Cirencester RFC has to inform its members of the passing of Club Veteran and Wanborough stalwart Iain Perkins.

“Iain was due to attend Vets night this year, as every year, and was also instrumental in helping to organise the upcoming CRFC versus Crediton tour match and festivities.”

Dozens of messages have been left on social media by those who knew Iain, expressing their sadness at his death.

Among them was former school friend Kevin Murray, who wrote: “He was very highly regarded in the community for his dedicated teaching and as a local rugby player.

“Iain you will be sadly missed by many, your passing is a great loss.”
