TWO netball teams put aside their league rivalry to come together in a charity match for Cancer Research UK last Sunday in Pewsey.

Pewsey Vale Netball Club and their Holt netball counterparts, of the Moonraker League in Devizes, did battle at Angel Yates Memorial ground in Pewsey for a friendly and raised £400.

The friendly was part of England Netball’s annual fundraising campaign, Net 10 for Life, an initiative whereby for every goal that is scored, 10p is donated.

However the two teams and the spectators put on a tea and cake sale to bolster the amount towards the cause.

“When we heard about this opportunity, I contacted the Holt team and they were very keen to get involved and it was well worth it - people were very generous with their donations too,” said Pewsey Vale player Nicole Edwards.

“This is happening all over the country and I wanted to do our bit too for a great cause. I think it was quite a success and everyone had a great time.

“You are supposed to do a 10p donation for every goal you score but if we did that for the actual amount we raised we would have to score so many goals so we thought we would add a cake sale as well to make it a healthy contribution.”

In 2015, England Netball’s initiative raised £15,000 and Ms Edwards believes this can also help to grow the appeal of the sport.

“Things like this can help raise the profile of the game as well as giving our club a bit more exposure to attract some potential players. It is a great sport that is on the up.”
