TRAFFIC is going to be banned from entering one end of Silverless Street in Marlborough as part of a six month trial because lorries keep crashing into buildings.

The ‘experimental order’ by Wiltshire Council will be stopping vehicles turning from Herd Street at the traffic light junction at The Green into Silverless Street, as of February 1 until August.

However, vehicles will still be able to get to Silverless Street from the other side at Kingsbury Street and it will not become one-way. Cars can still exit and pull out into Herd Street from Silverless Street too.

The trial comes following years of incidents of lorries hitting the corner of listed Dormy House building, as well as the former Gazette offices which is now furniture shop Studio 42.

Last year, there were around six occasions when lorry drivers collided with Dormy House as they tried to manoeuvre from Kingsbury Street into Silverless Street.

The Gazette reported on an incident in October which sent tiles flying off the building and saw the driver from the Netherlands carry on driving without stopping.

Louise Backhouse who works at Shield Management Services, based in the listed building, hopes it will help end the problem which leaves staff on edge every time they see a HGV go past.

She said: “We are hopeful that it will help us but really only time will tell. It’s a step in the right direction and we will have to wait and see if it will work. I can see the residents don’t want to make it pedestrian only.”

Last year, the Community Area Transport Group discussed removing the signs that had been put up in Silverless Street warning lorries not to drive down it. But it is thought to have caused confusion and instead be suggesting to drivers to in fact drive down the street.

Ms Backhouse added: “They took the misleading signs down quite quickly too. We have still had issues nevertheless but not quite as many.”

Marlborough Town Council will be discussing the trial at their council meeting on Monday in the town hall from 7pm.
