STUDENTS from St John’s Academy are celebrating being selected as finalists in a national choral competition.

The St John’s Academy Chorus is one of only six secondary age choirs in the county to land a place in the Barnardo's national choral competition after impressing judges with the clip they sent of them performing.

The student choir, which is directed by music teacher Max More, will be singing two songs in the finals at the Royal Festival Hall on Tuesday, February 9 with 23 other choirs.

It is the first time they have entered the competition and they will be judged on their tone quality, interpretation of music, balance, blend and more. The suitability of the chosen songs will also be taken into consideration by the judges.

First and second place will be awarded to each age category and the two winning choirs will be invited to sing at one of the charity's Young Supporters Concerts.

Each choir has to sing one of their competition pieces in the evening concert as well as joining in two massed choir items. British conductor and composer Douglas Coombes MBE has also offered to write a song for the two winning choirs.
