PEWSEY residents have given their backing to the village Neighbourhood Development Plan in a referendum.

More than 740 people cast their vote yesterday on whether the village should adopt the new plan, with 93 per cent voting ‘yes’ and 6 per cent voting ‘no’.

The plan will inform decisions on planning applications within the neighbourhood plan area.

It also gives communities more control over the future development by giving residents the chance to have their say on what happens where they live.

The Devizes Neighbourhood Plan was also given the backing of residents last week. The result from the referendum was 3,402 for 'yes', 369 for 'no'. The turnout was 22 percent, with 3,771 people voting out of a potential 17,115.

Pewsey councillor Peter Deck who is chairman of the working party said: "On behalf of the Parish Council and the NDP working group I would like to thank the people of Pewsey for their resounding support for the Neighbourhood Plan.

"Written in the community's name we hope that it will provide a sound and sensible way forward for development in the coming years."
