THE Spar shop in Pewsey has come out top after winning the Gazette and Herald’s Wiltshire’s Best award for best convenience store.

The shop on North Street, which is open from 6.30am until 10.30pm seven days a week, beat off stiff competition to win the award.

The other contenders for best convenience store were for Tesco Express in Lyneham and MS2 Stores Chippenham.

Susan Connolly, business development manager for Connolly Spar, said: “I’m really proud that we won this award and it is nice to know that people are aware of what we do.

“I think people voted for us as because of all the things we do in the community, such as getting involved with the Christmas lunch.”

The shop is not a stranger to awards after being voted best community retailer twice last year in both the Spar awards nationally and a South West competition run by CTC.

The shop was also a finalist in the national retail industry awards 2014.

Wiltshire’s Best has been running since January with a different category to vote for each month.

Sherston Post Office Stores bagged the prize for best newsagent in January, Nurdens Garden Centre in Malmesbury won best garden centre in February and Bengal Bite in Devizes won the best restaurant March.

This month readers have been voting for Wiltshire’s Best fish and chip shop, with the winner to be announced in June.
