THOUSANDS of gallons of water leaked out onto a Marlborough road last week after workman left a burst water main unattended for nearly 24 hours.

Thames Water engineers opened up a hole in the ground to fix the burst pipe in Elcot Lane by Stonebridge Close at around 11.30pm on January 10 but did not turn it off until the following evening.

In this time residents in Elcot Lane and Stonebridge Close had to walk through several inches of water, but fortunately no houses were flooded and the problem was fixed when the Thames Water team returned that evening.

A Thames Water spokesman said: “This was quite a complex job from a repair point of view but we completed our work on the pipe last night, temporarily reinstated the road surface and have taken away the traffic lights.

"We will plan a permanent road repair in the near future and we apologise for any disruption this essential work has caused.

"We get hundreds of leaks reported to us each week and try to get them fixed as quickly as we can. We have to prioritise those affecting water supplies first."
