OVER a hundred people flocked to the village of Hilcott over the weekend to take part in this year’s scarecrow trail.

The trail, now in its fourth year and organised by local teenager Matthew Wilson, set the theme of heroes and villains, giving visitors the task to try and find, as well as name, all of the scarecrows that were dotted around the village over the weekend (August 6-7).

Matthew, 18, said: “It went really well, we had quite a lot of people take part in it over the two days. I would say a couple hundred people came along and made their way around the trail. The numbers were roughly the same amount as last year, it would’ve been nice to have more people but it was great with the numbers we did have.”

After the participants bought their trail map from the village hall, they walked around Hilcott to spot as many of the scarecrows as possible, filling out their checklist. As well as hunting for the figures, everyone was encouraged to vote for the best one on the trail.

“The visitors voted and the winner was the BFG which was made by the Prance family of Wilsford. They are on holiday at the moment so we called them up to tell them the good news, they sounded very excited. The winners got a cup with Best Scarecrow 2016 on it,” added Matthew.

Plans for next year’s event will begin over the next month, with Matthew saying that a well-deserved rest will be the next step.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped with the scarecrows, the barbecue and the cakes as well as everyone who came along to take part,” he added.
