MEMBERS of the New Road Day Centre in Marlborough are taking part in their own triathlon, to raise money for a grand day out to Bournemouth.

Inspired by Sports Relief, the centre, which provides day care to 27 adults with learning and physical disabilities, has organised the Triple Challenge starting with the Blue Plaque Challenge today.

Deborah Bond, chairman of the New Road Centre, said: “Charities like ours rely on support from the communities we live in in order to be able to keep on doing what we do. We try and take the members to the seaside each year for a day trip which they all love.

“The cost is around £1,000 because we have to hire a specialist coach to accommodate large electric wheelchairs, which is why we are doing this event, so that we can continue to take our members out on such trips.”

As well as the Blue Plaque Challenge, which will see the members walk between each of the nine historical plaques where famous people used to live in the town, they will also be taking part in a 625-metre swim, a 10k walk and a static bike ride where they aim to clock up 100km.

Mrs Bond added: “Our day centre is staffed by staff and volunteers who aim to provide a safe, friendly place where vulnerable adults can be looked after, have a laugh, take part in activities and meet up with friends who are affected by similar issues.

“Many no longer have family and are lonely and isolated. We aim to create a family environment where they feel welcomed and part of a close group. Things that the rest of us take for granted like a day trip or a pub lunch are out of reach unless organisations like ours help them.”
