GREAT Bedwyn Cubs have scooped first prize in a closely contested scapheap challenge.

The event was hosted by the Marlborough Scout Group on Saturday, January 23, and has been running annually for many years.

The object of the challenge was to build a model from recycled household waste, such as plastic bottles, card, rope and small items to give detail to the build.

Each Cub pack arrived with the scrap which is placed in a huge pile on the floor and organiser of the event Viv Lucas, who is deputy district commissioner, then gave the Cubs the theme they had to work with. This year it was ‘in the deep’.

There was then a mad dash to select items to build the model. Tidworth Cubs turned a lampshade into a sea urchin.

Five Cub packs took part; Marlborough Maurice and Granham, Great Bedwyn, Vale

Of Pewsey and Tidworth.

The event was judged by Peter Povey, chairman of North East Wiltshire Scout Council, who said it was a very difficult decision to make.

Anna Cox district commissioner also attended the event to give her support to all the Cub packs and their leaders.

The winners’ trophy was awarded to the Cub pack from Great Bedwyn for their submarine, complete with working periscope. They will now go forward to the Wiltshire County Challenge on February 6.

The chairman also presented each Cub with a scrapheap certificate for taking part.

Mr Povey said: “The Cubs displayed a very high standard, their team work, enthusiasm, and attention to detail was amazing.”
