PLANS for a new retirement development in Marlborough have been approved and the developers are hoping the design will make residents in the town ‘proud.’

Renaissance Retirement will start transforming the Old Yard in London Road, which was used as building supplies base, early next year into 28 luxury apartments, a mini courtyard and 22 car parking spaces.

It is expected to be finished by 2017 and the proposal was approved this week through delegated officer’s powers.

A public exhibition was held earlier this year and Marlborough Town Council voted to recommend Wiltshire Council approve the plans after not finding a substantial reason for them to be rejected.

However, concerns were raised about the increasing number of flats for over 55s being built in the town and lack of affordable apartments for first time buyers.

Renaissance's managing director Robert Taylor said: “This is a model example of how localism can work very well. We did an extensive consultation process and councillors and members of the public had their say. We listened and incorporated some of the feedback into our plans.

“The officers also played a vital role in this planning application and should be commended. We are now totally committed to develop a stunning retirement development that the people of Marlborough will be proud.”

Nick Watkins development director added: "We received considerable interest in our proposed scheme from local residents. Before we buy a site we undertake a feasibility study to ensure there is a need within the town.

“Our research reinforces that there is a strong demand for independent retirement apartments in Marlborough and the location fits our development profile.”
