COUNCILLORS in Marlborough may consider bidding for ownership of the town's children's centre if it closes and potentially turn it back into a tourist information centre.

The topic was discussed at the town council meeting last week after being suggested by councillors Stewart Dobson and Marian Hannaford-Dobson, where it was agreed they would write to Wiltshire Council expressing their interest in owning the centre, as well as the former youth centre in St Margaret's Mead.

A consultation is currently being carried out to decide the fate of The Corner House in George Lane car park, run by charity 4Children, along with 15 others in the county which Wiltshire Council are proposing to shut to save money.

Mum Jemma Clarke, 21, from Aldbourne, has set up a petition to try and save it.

Councillor Dobson said this week: “I believe that the public consultation is very important and I quite understand the concerns that have already been expressed by families that are currently using the centre and the reasons for their petition.

“Regardless of the result of the consultation I felt that it was important that if in the future Wiltshire Council do decide to close the centre that Marlborough Town Council informs Wiltshire Council that they might be interested in an asset transfer of the building.

“I do feel that the town council should always explore the possibility of transferring land, buildings and services from Wiltshire Council if it makes sense financially and improves the service to our residents."

Coun Dobson added: “Purely from a personal point of view I believe that it would make an ideal town office that would provide facilities for tourist Information and other community uses.

“Unlike the present council offices its location is perfect with parking spaces outside and being on the main route for people visiting the surgery and the schools, while also being in the main car and coach park for visitors to the town wanting information and help.”
