BAT spotting and bug hunting events are being organised by Action for the River Kennet in Marlborough for members of the public to take part in.

On Monday, (August 24) James Shipman from the Bat Conservation Trust was going to be hosting a bat walk and talk at Stonebridge Wild River Reserve from 8.30pm, but this has now been cancelled due to the weather and will be rearranged.

There are usually good sightings of Daubenton's bats hunting above the river, so people may be able to catch a glimpse of the mammal. The event is free and everyone is welcome. Appropriate footwear and a torch are essential and those interested should meet at the boardwalk, Stonebridge Lane.

A BioBlitz is also taking place on September 5 from 10am and will offer the opportunity to explore the Stonebridge Wild River Reserve and find creatures that rely on the habitats in and by chalk streams for their survival.

Members of ARK will be in a BioBlitz tent in the meadow lending out pots and nets for visitors to use and bring back their finds for identification. Experts will be on hand to help identify and photograph what is found.

Last year, the event attracted people young and old and new species on the site were recorded.
The BioBlitz is in partnership with Thames Water who work with ARK to spread the message about our the importance of chalk stream environment, educating the community to use water wisely and make sure that there is enough water to meet the needs of the community and the environment.
