MORE than a dozen cubs marched their way to the Malmesbury Market Cross to renew their promise in a fun filled day to mark the centenary of the national group.

Stood at the Market Cross at exactly 7.16pm, the fourteen cubs, aged 8-10, renewed their promise to do their best, to help others and to serve the Queen, before enjoying a birthday cake at St Mary's Hall.

Jonathan Barstow, Malmesbury Scout group leader, said: "We went to the market cross and we renewed our promise there and we went back to our HQ where we played some games and then had birthday cake and sang happy birthday to the Cubs. It rounded off our year quite nicely as we have been on a group holiday, camping and an activities day in Marlborough."

Cub Scout groups around the country also took part in the celebrations on December 16 and Mr Barstow believes the organisation and its aims to provide fun challenging adventures to young people is incredibly important to the community.

He added "I think Cubs is very important as it helps build their self confidence and team working and the social side gets them out and about camping, walking, fire lighting - all things they would not necessarily do."
