MALMESBURY woman Esther Hamill is bringing art and craft kits to children in the squalid refugees’ camp at Calais known as The Jungle.
Ms Hamill, who left for the ten-day trip on Sunday, said: “The children in The Jungle have been through unbelievable pain and suffering and are staying in the makeshift camp, with very little distraction.
“Hopefully, the materials and art/craft sessions I'm hoping to provide, will go at least a small way to allowing the children to deal with their traumatic experiences or take a rest from their stressful circumstances.”
Ms Hammill will be working at a makeshift school at the camp and will also be involved in the operation handling waste at the site.
She launched an online fund for the £1,000 trip, which stands at £680.
She said: “I need to pay for my travel and overnight stays in Calais as well as some immunisations before handling waste on site.
“Any money left over will be used for further trips to the camp and to purchase simple art materials, such as pencils, sharpeners, paper, children's scissors, paper-glue and waterproof folders.”
