MOVE over Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal – there is a new cookbook on the block.

The Malmesbury charity Heals has produced its own volume of tasty, affordable and nutritious recipes entitled Healthy Eating and Life Skills.

The town’s community cookbook also covers meals which cater for people with common food allergies, as well as being suitable for those with a visual impairment, learning difficulties and diabetes.

Described by Heals as a unique venture, it was produced with the help of Wiltshire-based nutritional expert Dr Eva Detko and was unveiled at Malmesbury Town Hall on Tuesday evening (21-4-15).

It was funded by the Malmesbury League of Friends, endorsed by GPs at the Malmesbury Primary Care Centre and features artistic input from students at Malmesbury School.

“We are really pleased with it,” said Heals volunteer general manager Alison Cross-Jones. “It focuses on one of the key aims of Heals – the advancement of health.”

The concept of a community cookbook came about 14 months ago when Mrs Cross-Jones met Dr Detko - a nutritional therapist and author who lives near Chippenham - at a women’s business meeting.

Dr Detko was keen to help Heals in any way she could and they came up with the idea of a special cookbook tailored to meet specific needs.

Dr Detko provided the recipes which Mrs Cross-Jones said that - unlike many other cookbooks looking to help people with certain needs – were easy to follow.

The Mayor of Malmesbury Sue Poole, who was at the launch, said the book was a fantastic project.

She said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea. I’m really pleased that it has gluten-free recipes because members of my family are gluten intolerant and I always find it difficult cooking for them.”

She went on: “I am old enough to remember when people wouldn’t dream of throwing away left-over food but would make use of it the next day.

“The community cookbook will help young families today make good use of left-over food and cheaper cuts.”
