Film buffs in Malmesbury have achieved a coup with the first UK screening of a film by award-winning director Bruno Coppola.

A member of Hollywood’s famous family, Mr Coppola, who has lived in Malmes-bury for seven years, has won plaudits for films such as Stuff That Bear! and Rules of Love.

Now he has offered the Malmesbury Film Society the chance to screen his 2007 film, Unknown Things, which has never been shown in the UK before.

Mr Coppola, a cousin of Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, and Mayor of Malmesbury Sue Poole will attend the screening at St Mary’s Hall on Sunday.

Co-chairman of the film society Maria Marsh said: “This is the first time the film will be shown in a UK cinema, so the Malmesbury Film Society are very grateful for this wonderful opportunity.

“Mr Coppola has previously supported local community events, including showing highlights of his films and providing colourful commentary for the audience.”

Unknown Things stars Saskia Reeves, whose credits include Spooks, Close My Eyes and a Christmas Carol, and Paul Rhys, who has appeared in Chaplin, From Hell and Vincent and Theo.

It is edited by Tariq Anwar, who worked on classics such as The King’s Speech and American Beauty.

A short excerpt from Unknown Things was shown during the Malmesbury Carnival in 2013, according to Ms Marsh, “leaving everyone who saw it enchanted and wanting to see the entire film.”

She added: “We are excited that we can now bring this wonderful film to a wider audience.”

Unknown Things is a described as a mix of mystery, romance and murder.

It follows an antiques dealer in London, who is obsessed with the wife of one of his clients and seeks out ever-more unusual collectable mechanical objects to be near her for longer.

Ms Marsh said: “It will be a special evening and perfect for Valentine’s weekend.”

Doors at St Mary’s Hall open at 7pm on Sunday, for celebration drinks, with the film due to start at 7.30pm.
