Big-hearted John Assheton never had children, so some of the money he would have spent on them went into launching a charitable trust to improve facilities in the village he grew to love.
As well as ploughing cash into Oaksey School, the village hall, the sports pavilion and soccer field, he provided the community with its first youth hut, which he built in his back garden.
Oaksey Youth Club, which evolved into a key local facility, has now celebrated its 21st birthday with a gathering of present and past members and leaders.
Youth leader Jai Cunningham said: “We owe a big thank you to Mr Assheton.
“It was a great get-together, with parents and people who used to run the club joining up for a big celebration.”
He also bought the School House for the school, made huge contributions towards the sports pavilion, Jennings Field houses – he also gave land – a village hall and shop.
Hundreds of youngsters passed through the club, which meets at the school on Thursdays and has activities for sevens to 11s.
