A team of people on mobility scooters will be joining in this year’s pancake race in Devizes.

The annual event, on February 17, is organised by Age Concern Wiltshire to raise money for its work with older people.

Mobility scooter riders, who attend a technology club run by Age Concern Wiltshire to improve their computer skills, are entering a team but are looking for two more people to join them.

The younger generation will be represented by Devizes School sixth formers who are determined to challenge the unbeaten champions of the race the Gazette and Herald.

Sixth former Robin Smith also helps out at Age Concern’s technology club.

He said he was very aware from the people attending the club what a difference it can make if they are able to use email and the Internet confidently.

He added: “The pancake races sound like great fun and we would love to get to the finals and challenge the Gazette and Herald team.

“In fact, some people are sponsoring us extra if we manage to beat them.”

Last year’s races raised more than £500. Penny Church, assistant director at Age Concern Wiltshire, said: “Many people have family memories of pancake day and it’s a good day to bring all the generations together for a series of light hearted races.

“At the same time we know there are many older people who are not able to get out of their homes to join in community events like this.

“The money we raise through donations and sponsorship will help support the services that we provide to people in need.”

The races start at 12.30pm on February 17 in Devizes Market Place.

The pancakes will be provided by the Black Swan Hotel.

The races are being held a week early this year so that schoolchildren can take part during the half term break.

There is time for teams of four people to enter or if you would like to be part of the mobility scooter team.
