PEOPLE of all ages helped to raise more than £7,000 for charity when they put their best foot forward for a ten mile hike around Devizes.

Mayor Nigel Carter got the Lions sponsored walk started at The Wharf and everyone who took part managed to complete the full distance.

Doug Simpson from the Lions said: "Over 100 walkers were at the ready when Mayor Nigel Carter announced the start of the walk. There was 10 mile challenge ahead and all walkers managed the full distance and with the exception of a few blisters finished back at Devizes Wharf in good spirits within three hours.

"In excess of £7000 was raised for a range of local charities."

Representative of youth groups and sports clubs took part and were joined for the first time by a large number of people from Julia's House children's hospice.

Mr Simpson said: "The Devizes Lions Club were pleased to be able to make this fundraising opportunity available to local charities who all enjoy raising their own funds. “

Among those who enjoyed the hike were 6th Devizes Clubs. Akela Scott Coleman said: "6th Devizes Cubs had a really successful Lions walk. Six cubs Jack, Toby, Ben, Danny, Jay and Olivia took part. We started from the Wharf and then went up to and around Roundway Hill then back again. We even made it back earlier this year.

"A couple needed a bit of encouragement as we came close to the end. But a few wise words from Akela got them going again and we were soon back at the Wharf, ready to collect our stamped sponsor cards and go home for a rest. I’d like to say to all the Cubs who took part this year, a big bravo."
