TWO students from Devizes School recently visited Avon Rubber in Melksham to learn about careers for women in science and engineering.

Natasha Court and Sophie Middleton, both GCSE design and technology students at Devizes, joined pupils from other local schools for a special science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) day at the factory.

The students took a tour around the Avon factory, heard from female engineers and won a problem solving competition.

Tim Woodman, deputy head of technology, enterprise and design at Devizes School said: “The girls performed well after a nervous start in the task, and designed and modelled an idea for a product before presenting it to one of the senior members of the company.

“The day was a great all round experience for the two girls and it provided a real insight into how to get into engineering as well as the kind of jobs they could aspire to. They both had an enjoyable morning and the company was extremely welcoming.”
