ECOLOGISTS working with the Canal & River Trust are upset that two clutches of swan eggs appear to have been stolen from nests on the Kennet & Avon Canal.

In one incident eight eggs were taken from the nest by lock 41 and in April another seven eggs disappeared. A spokesman for Canal & River Trust said: "This is a criminal offence and we have provided details to the police and the RSPB."

Taking swan eggs is a crime under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and and a conviction can carry a custodial sentence. Wiltshire police are investigating.

Those using the tow path on the canal in Devizes will have to take a diversion between Cemetery Road Bridge and Town Bridge has begun and is expected to be completed by June 27.

During the work the path will be closed to walkers and cyclists and it will not be possible to moor up at the locks although they will remain passable.

Originally it was planned to start the work in March but it was put back so it did not interfere with Easter and the May day bank holiday.

A spokesman for the Canal & River Trust said: "Some moorings will remain open and will be managed on site dependant on the operation being carried out. Our contractors will work with boaters to ensure safe access.

"Canal & River Trust is also aware that events will be taking place during this time period and will endeavour to make the towpath safe for users at these times."
