GOVERNORS of a Devizes primary fear plans to restrict parent parking will make life more difficult for them and people living nearby.

The headteacher and governors of Nursteed School in Windsor Drive fear the Wiltshire Council proposals to bring in extensive no waiting orders will not solve parking issues.

A letter to parents from the governors said: "We have learnt of a proposal by Wiltshire Council to restrict parking near Nursteed School. This is of obvious interest to all parents who drive to and from school.

"In brief, it’s proposed that no waiting at any time be introduced on sections of road. In addition a Bus Stop Clearway will be introduced on Windsor Drive.

"This is not a scheme that has the backing of the school governors. We understand that parking near the school is unsatisfactory. However, whilst controlling traffic to make it safer when a bus pulls up is probably sensible, we fear the full proposal will make things markedly worse."

Head Tim Heath said that the school did want the council to make improvements for coaches and buses that need to park near the school but felt the proposal had gone too far.

He said: "We do not think this proposal is a good idea or that it will work. It would be nice to think all parents could walk their children to school but in reality that is not going to happen."

He said there were fears that the new plan would make life more difficult for people living in houses close to the school as the parents would have to park outside their homes.

The order would mean that people would not be able to park at any time on long stretches of Brickley Lane and Windsor Drive close to the roundabout next to the school.

Governors have asked parents to write to the council after looking at the full proposal at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/council/troconsultations.htm where there is a link for responses.

This week Wiltshire Council's cabinet member for highways said the school had originally asked for a scheme for coaches. He said: "If the school writes to us we will take the views into consideration. This is what the consultation process is about."
