ROADWORKS started in the centre of Devizes this morning but hours after the heavy machinery moved into the Market Place no details are yet available on who is doing the work or how long it will last.

No mention of the work appears on the Wiltshire Council website and a spokesman for the council said it did not know which utility company was responsible.

A spokesman said at 12.25pm today, three hours after they were contacted by the Gazette: "The road is not closed. The work is down to a utility company but as yet we do not know which one.

"If the road was closed they would have to tell us immediately."

Last week part of Long Street was controlled by traffic lights while work was carried out but this finished on Thursday. Signs in the Market Place are confusing as one warns of roadworks while another says road closed.

At 8.30am today heavy machinery was being moved into place outside The Bear Hotel.

But, just minutes after Wiltshire Council said the work was being carried out by a utility firm, it turned out that the council itself is resurfacing a road off the Market Place.

A council spokesman said: "This is connected to roadworks on Castle Lane just off the Market Place where we are carrying out resurfacing. They are scheduled to take up to three days and Castle Lane will be closed but with access for residents."

But the council was unable to confirm if this would cause any disruption to the Market Place itself.
