THE PLANNED strike at a packaging company in Devizes over a dispute about pay has been called off for bosses to negotiate.

Factory staff at DS Smith in Nursteed Road, which provides packaging for chocolate giants such as Cadbury, were due to walk out at midnight on Sunday and not return until 11.59pm on Monday unless a settlement was agreed but now bosses have invited GMB union and Unite representatives to talk.

Andrew Large, director general of the Confederation of Paper Industries, said: "The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) is pleased that the industry, Unite and GMB have agreed to further talks on reaching agreement in the packaging sector pay negotiation. To allow these discussions to take place the unions have suspended their intended actions.

"The CPI is committed to supporting collective bargaining within the Corrugated National Agreement and is hopeful that a speedy and fair resolution can now be reached."

A worker at the factory told the Gazette this week that the pay dispute has been going on for several months.
