AWARD winning singers from Devizes School will be among those competing in the final of this year's Wiltshire Choir of the Year competition on Saturday.

The Harmony Choir made up pupils from a cross section of year groups was one of four groups that was chosen to compete in the final before a panel of talented judges.

Head of music Amanda Hodder said: "The students did really well, they are an excellent group, some of the Year 11 students will be leaving us shortly after exams so this will be their final event as part of the school choir."

The choir has also been put through its paces by Rob Nash who runs the school's choir club and gives weekly singing lessons. Headteacher Phil Bevan tweeted his congratulations to the choir after its first performance at St John's Church, Devizes last month.

A total of 12 choirs from across the county took part in the preliminary round on April 26 in the contest organised by The Devizes Eisteddfod committee under the leadership of musical director Michael Johnson.

In the final each choir will perform for up to ten minutes and then the winner will receive the Wiltshire Choir Of The Year trophy.

The contest will be judged by David Bruce-Payne, Sarah Jefferies and Valerie Hoppé.

Tickets are now available from Winkworth estate agents in the Market Place, Devizes. They cost £5 for adults. Students are free but still need a ticket.
