YOUNGSTERS had the chance to try their hand at everything from animation and musical theatre to kayaking and trampolining when they took part in this year's Camp Xtra at Devizes School.

The week-long programme had more sports and activities than ever before to keep children busy throughout the day. Co-ordinator Mike Rose said: "As a result of the enthusiasm demonstrated and positive feedback received last year we added a further six activities this year.

"These were X-Fit, rugby summer school, creative felt workshop, musical theatre, orienteering and junior first aid."

On Friday youngsters, who had been taking the musical theatre workshops, put on a performance to show what they had learnt during the week.

There was also a show by the animation students and goodies created in the cookery classes as students inspired by Great British Bake Off attempted to keep soggy bottoms at bay.

Former pupil Rhianna Andrew, who is one of the country's top young trampolinists, returned to her old school to give a demonstration and to present a cheque for £500 from sponsors Bag4Sport Foundation.

Mr Rose said he was delighted with the way the week had gone and the commitment of the youngsters. He said: "Camp Xtra is a carefully-designed summer programme to develop children’s skills and techniques over the week whilst providing opportunities to experience new activities and make new friends.

"Prices had remained the same for the fifth year running to ensure families got good value for money without compromising the quality of the coaching the children received."

School deputy head Sue Marshall praised Mr Rose, who is in charge for the first time this year, for bringing fresh ideas to the project.

She said: "I was delighted to appoint Mike Rose as the new Camp Xtra co-ordinator and the new custodian of this amazing, innovative and simply wonderful week of activities for young people."
