Pupils at Seend C of E Primary School have tried their hand at fencing.

Armed with plastic swords and protective gear, the youngsters had a go at the activity in a new club run by Go Active at the school.

Having already run a street surfing club, head teacher Jackie Chalk said that she was keen for the pupils to experience all sorts of different types of exercise.

She said: “We wanted to give them a chance to try an activity that would be new to them. The children have been keen to take part because there is nowhere nearby that they can go to experience fencing, so it is great that it is now on their doorstep.

“I was a little bit dubious at first but soon realised that the children use plastic foils and they wear the face guard and body protector.”

Year 5 pupil Juliette said: “It is really good and it’s different to anything else that we would normally do at school.

“We are taught to defend the foil on our stomachs and the different positions we need to use to strike.”
