AT a time when loneliness can affect the hardiest of people, care workers around the country put their heart and soul into making Christmas just that little bit extra special for their elderly residents.

Last week, residents at Brunel House in Box enjoyed Christmas with Father Christmas, staff dressed as elves and a variety of festive activities.

Although some carers have to give up spending Christmas with their own families, many cherish their time with the residents, such as 100-year-old Doris Gifford, who become part of their extended families.

"Generally people who work in care have a desire to look after people and be a part of their lives and I think this is true for most of our staff here," manager Jo Nielson said. "I don’t think anyone here begrudged working at Christmas.

"The residents become part of our extended family, so it is not a great jike for us to make this time of year a happy experience for everyone involved."

Marianne Castle, activities coordinator, added: "It is all about making them feel like they are part of our family and for me that is one of the things that makes the job so worthwhile.

"I wasn't working this Christmas but I would rather be here than sitting on the sofa eating chocolates all day!"

Residents were not only treated to a Christmas dinner, they opened their presents with Father Christmas and his elves and they enjoyed a number of festive activities.

Mrs Gifford said: “We did lots of activities everyone here did their best to make it a lovely day."
