VILLAGERS were able to take a step back in time over the weekend as thousands attended the Lacock at War show.

Now in its fourth year, the weekend-long show organised by the West Wilts area of the Military Vehicle Trust, saw over 5,000 people make their way to the vintage-decorated village which was adorned with Second World War memorabilia.

Over 70 military and vintage vehicles were also on display alongside re-enactors from living history groups who aimed to educate well-wishers on the history of the war.

Lacock at War chairman Jason Close said the weekend came together better than he expected, particularly at how attendance was up 10 per cent from last year.

He added: “There was such a nice feel to the weekend and lot of the local businesses got involved with the bakery making a wartime bread pudding.

“The National Trust overflow car park was bursting at the seams and the weather was beautiful.”

For the first time in the events history, crowds were also treated to the George Formby Experience which mirrored the sights and sounds of the 1940's.

Other highlights of the weekend included a flyover by the Dakota as well as a performance by singer Madeline Brown and a burlesque workshop overseen by Dulcie Demure.

Mr Close, who has been organising the weekend since February with the WWMVT committee, said he appreciated the time and effort many people went to by dressing in 1940s attire which he believes “brought the village alive.”

He added: “A personal highlight was the last post at the end of the day because it is the year which marks the 70th anniversary of VE day and it was also VJ day on the Saturday.

“It is almost the 75th anniversary of the battle of Britain and so it is a big cumulative year of memories. The whole field fell silent for the last post and that is the best feeling that the committee gets out of it because people come in and have a great time and get educated.

“Over the years we have grown so much and the village loved it and so we will be carrying it on for as long as we can.

“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback so long may it thrive.”
